In countries around the world grassroots groups are working to improve access to clean and affordable water. In the developing world, more than 1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water and 2.5 billion lack access to sanitation services. The result is that over 5 million people, mostly children, die annually due to preventable water-borne diseases. IMF and World Bank policies pushing privatization of water are exactly the wrong solution.
